Tunable electro-fermentation using metabolically engineered Pseudomonas putida

Bio-based products, obtained from renewables using microbial cell factories, are meant to become an integral part of the developing bioeconomy in order to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. In this regard, microbial electrochemical technology (MET) is emerging as promising concept to overcome the inherent limitations and enhance the efficiency of bio-based production. In this context, the overall objective of our project is to gain a more profound insight into the metabolism of P. putida and to explore the potential of system biology approach with respect to the application of P. putida in METs. The ultimate goal is an efficient bioelectrochemical platform towards commercially attractive acids, keto-acids and aldaric acids which create and use novel strains of P. putida metabolically streamlined for an efficient electrogenic metabolism.
